Clergy Sexual Abuse in the Diocese of Rockville Centre

The Diocese of Rockville Centre serves a Catholic population of 90,000+ across 12,036 square miles. The diocese has 93 parishes, 7 missions, 10 elementary schools, and 2 high schools. As of 2018, more than 60 priests, clergy and employees of the diocese have been publicly accused of sexual misconduct.

In 2017, Church officials announced an independent compensation plan for survivors of sexual abuse within the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Serving more as a stopgap rather than a long-term solution, this plan is extremely limited in its capacity to help clergy sex abuse survivors find justice. We recommend that survivors pursue healing and justice through the New York Child Victims Act and urge you to contact legal counsel prior to taking action.

Suffolk County Grand Jury Report

On February 10, 2003, the Suffolk County Grand Jury Report was released after an investigation into the Diocese of Rockville Centre, its priest and its parishes. The Grand Jury examined personnel records of the diocese’s priests, including secret archive files of 43 priests. The Grand Jury concluded that “officials in the Diocese failed in their responsibility to protect children” and “ignored complaints about the sexually abusive behavior of priests.”
